  1. They paid an Israeli company $15,000 for doing it with a method that is credible and would have taken roughly 4-5 hours.

  2. They cared about a precedent. They could have gone to the outsourced company right away and it would have been over in hours.

    Forcing Apple to write an OS hack would have taken weeks, if not months.
