These are interesting. Some obvious ones are well known, others were a surprise – including the bill Berbie Sanders sponsored about having the gov buy drug patents as soon as they become available — which would be very smart.

The next time you hear someone complain about how the poor get “all this free stuff,” show them this.

  1. The simple fact is that a lot of these subsidies don’t particularly make sense – particularly the billions to the petrol industry. Those subsidies are not tied, in any way, to a requirement to keep prices low or within a specific range.

    I would understand subsidies in the billions, if they were tied to (for example) “fuel prices must be kept at 99 cents a gallon”, as low fuel prices would result in lower prices for any consumer good that are being transported via trucks or planes — but that’s not happening.

    That’s what needs to be reformed – tie subsidies or tax deductions to having to actually provide something – instead of just maximizing shareholder values…
